書的內容算不上精彩，但是夾在書中的一張小紙條非常有趣——它是一條很薄的牛皮紙條，上面寫著「試金石」的秘密。試金石是一種能把普通金屬變成純金的小鵝卵石。
紙條解釋說，試金石與成千上萬的普通鵝卵石混在一起，無法從外表辨認，秘密就是：試金石是暖的，而普通鵝卵石是冷的。
於是，這個窮人變賣了他為數不多的家當，買了些簡單的生活必需品，在海邊安頓下來，開始尋找試金石。他知道，如果他撿起一塊普通的鵝卵石，發現它是冷的，又把它放下，那可能會上百次地重複撿到同一塊石頭。所以，當他發現鵝卵石是冷的，就把它扔到海裡。於是，他整天就這樣撿、扔，但沒有一塊是試金石。日復一日，時間就這樣一周又一周、一個月又一個月地過去了。他不斷機械地重複這個動作——撿起一塊鵝卵石，冷的——扔到海裡；又撿起一塊，又扔到海裡。
突然，有一天，大約是中午，他撿起一塊鵝卵石，是熱的。他還沒有意識到自己做了什麼時，就已經習慣性地把試金石扔進了大海。他已經形成了這樣一種習慣，就是把撿起來的每一塊鵝卵石扔進大海，即使是他渴望的那塊出現了，也不例外。
機會亦如此，如果我們不保持警惕，那麼總有一天，到手的機會也會被我們隨手扔掉。
