Ihavefoundonethingtobesoverytrue—thevirtuesIlearnedasaboyarestillfundamentalvirtues.Mypointofviewhaschanged,ofcourse,overtheyears,andsohasthatofmyfriends,butsomuchofallthischangeofviewpointislikeasmallboygazingatahillontheplainsofNebraska.Thehillremainsthesame.Thesmallboyonlyseesitfromanotherangleashegrowsup.
IhavealwaystriedtowalkcompletelyaroundeveryhillIhavefoundinexistencesince,sothatIcouldgetaviewfromeveryangle.This,Ithink,revealsthedifferencebetweenhonestyandcynicism.Whenyouseethehillfromeveryangle,youhaveamuchbetterchanceatkeepinglifeinfocus.Whenyouonlyseeitfromoneangleyouruntheverygreatdangerofbecomingcynical.
Twoofthefundamentalvirtuesthathavebeensuchagreatcomforttomeinmylife,fromthedaysofmyboyhoodinWahoo,Nebraska,untilnowareloyaltyandcharity.ThereareotherfundamentalsIlearnedasaboy,butprincipallyloyaltyandcharity.
Loyaltyisnotonlyjustaterm—ithasbeenawayoflifeforme.Imeannotonlyloyaltytomyfriendsandfamily,buttothehonestvaluesonwhichourcountrywasfounded.Andtome,thisguidepostofloyaltyofnecessitymeansloyaltytoone』sownself.
WhenIwasgrowingup,Irebelledagainstsomanythings,andfoughtagainstsomanyofthebasicideasoflife—butIfoundaftersomuchrebellionandwalkingcompletelyaroundthathillontheNebraskaplains,inmymind』seye,thatthesevirtueshadnotbeentestedoverthecenturiesinvain.

Iamgratefulforthoseold-fashionedvirtuesthatIlearnedasaboyinNebraska.AndIhopeIwillhaveenoughhumilityalwaystobethankfulIwasborninacountrythatgivemethischanceatlife.

我發現有一點極為正確——兒時學到的很多美德在今天依然重要。歲月流逝，我和朋友們的想法與觀點自然都有所變化，然而這不過是個人看待事物的方式改變了。就好比一個小男孩站在內布拉斯加平原上看山，山沒有變，只是隨著男孩的長大，他看山的角度發生了變化。
從此，為了從不同的角度看山，我總會試著圍繞發現的每一座山走上一整圈。我認為，這就是誠實正直之人與憤世嫉俗者之間的區別。從不同角度看待事物，你就能更輕鬆地抓住生活的精髓；而當你僅從一個角度片面地觀察世界時，就很可能會變得憤世嫉俗。
從我在內布拉斯加州瓦胡鎮的童年時代起，直到今天，忠誠與仁愛這兩種最基本的美德始終為我的生活帶來莫大的慰藉。孩提時，我還學到了其他一些基本準則，但最重要的還是這兩條。
在我看來，忠誠不只是一個簡單的詞，而且是一種生活方式。我所指的並不只是忠於家庭與朋友，還要忠於我們建國的基礎，即誠實正直的價值觀。我認為，忠誠這一必需的原則也意味著對我們內在自我的忠誠。
成長過程中，我曾幾度叛逆，與生活中的很多基本觀念背道而馳。但是，多次叛逆後，我想像著自己圍繞內布拉斯加平原的那座山走了整整一圈，終於明白這些美德的確經得起時間的考驗。
在逆境中給予我莫大安慰的另一個原則是仁愛。這是我們必須學習的美德。生活中的我很幸運，因為我能夠樂善好施。行善者不應祈求回報，因為我們從行善中所得到的滿足感便是最好的報答。
行善，必須真心誠意。否則，任何形式的給予皆是對生命本身極大的欺騙。
仁愛與忠誠深深感動著我的生命，為我生活的每一天帶來極大的滿足。每天臨睡前，忠誠這一原則都會提醒我反省自己一天的行為，確保當日的所作所為沒有為他人帶來任何故意的傷害。
每天臨睡前，我都會努力為自己對他人造成的傷害予以彌補。這無疑是種自私的行為，因為只有這樣，每夜我才不會輾轉難眠。
橫看成嶺側成峰，人生亦是如此。無論是在倫敦、巴黎、羅馬、開羅、紐約、好萊塢還是內布拉斯加的瓦胡鎮，我所看到的美德始終不變。
感謝兒時在內布拉斯加學到的那些傳統美德。我希望，我能永遠對我所出生的這個國家滿懷謙恭，心存感激，因為它給予了我生存的機會。
